PD Dr. Stuart McLennan

Director of Research

Stuart McLennan ist Senior Research Associate am Institut für Geschichte und Ethik der Medizin (IGEM) der Technischen Universität München (TUM). Seit 2022 ist er stellvertretender Leiter des Instituts.

Seine Forschung ist in der Regel sehr interdisziplinär und praxisorientiert und nutzt den Ansatz der empirischen Bioethik, der ethische, rechtliche und politische Analysen mit empirischen Methoden integriert. Sein allgemeiner Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf ethischen und regulatorischen Fragen im Zusammenhang mit lernenden Gesundheitssystemen, insbesondere Datenwissenschaft und KI im Gesundheitswesen, Patientensicherheit und Qualitätsverbesserung sowie klinische Forschung. Er ist auch intensiv an der Entwicklung des neuen interdisziplinären Ansatzes der embedded ethics (EE) zur Integration ethischer Überlegungen in die KI-Entwicklung beteiligt.

Er hat bislang 9 geförderte Forschungsprojekte erfolgreich geleitet mit einem Drittmittelumfang von ca. 451.000 EUR. Seine Forschungen wurden in führenden Fachzeitschriften für Medizinethik und Gesundheit veröffentlicht. Er hat ein umfangreiches deutsch- und englischsprachiges Lehrangebot für Medizinethik und Medical Humanities für Medizinstudierende in Deutschland, der Schweiz und Österreich entwickelt.

Stuart McLennan hat einen Bachelor in Philosophie (mit Schwerpunkt Ethik und Moralphilosophie), einen Master in Bioethik und Gesundheitsrecht (mit Auszeichnung), einen PhD in Biomedizinischer Ethik (mit Summa Cum Laude), und im Dezember 2020 erhielt er seine Habilitation und Venia docendi in Biomedizinischer Ethik von der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Basel. Das Umhabilitationsverfahren an der Medizinischen Fakultät der TUM wurde im Herbst 2021 erfolgreich abgeschlossen.
